Verses from SFC participants

I used to believe
Disability was defined by my impairment
Language around disability was not important
And then I learned some more…

I used to believe
Independent living came with its own philosophy
Disabled people were represented well in the media
And then I learned some more… John D

I used to believe
That my impairment disabled me
That Spinal Muscular Atrophy was all others would see
Without functioning legs how could I ever be independent and free?
And then I learned some more… Aoife M

I used to believe
I am one of the people who has a quiet voice
But now it seems I am faced with a choice
I now have a choice to use my voice and advocate for people with a disability who have no voice
And then I learned some more… Gillian S

I used to believe
That others would set the pace
To not expect me to win at the race
Of course, this should not be the way
And then I learned some more…

I used to believe
That is was a one size fits all
What would happen to me
I am not even 5 feet tall!
And then I learned some more… Catherine C

I used to believe
The problem was in me
I was the reason for accessibility
And without me, for others life would be easy
And then I learned some more…

I used to believe
That I was alone
When unnecessary things I would groan,
And I always felt that my feelings were my own,
And then I learned some more… Iqura N

I used to believe
Something was wrong with me
That cerebral palsy was my disability
Then I attended the ILMI AGM in 2019
I discovered the social model of disability
And then I learned some more… Paula S

I used to believe
That to be strong was to shut my mouth
That North was weaker than South
That to speak out was uncouth
And then I learned some more

I used to believe
That cowardice was best
That you must be better than the rest
That superiority was your Sunday best
And then I learned some more

I used to believe
that my fellow students are
growing towards ability
And see no problem of yesteryear
And then I leant some more… James B

I used to believe
back then in the times
Disabled people had no future
Had little opportunity
Just bus and day centre to go
And then I leant some more…

I used to believe
that we had no future but
Today I see my fellow students
Tell yourself how good you are
Thank god I learnt some more… Pat M

I used to believe
There was only one way of looking at
disability through the medical model Len
It was up to me complete every task myself
no matter how energy and time it takes
in my mind asking for help equated with being lazy
and letting my impairment win
And then I learned more…

I used to believe
The less obvious your disability
the more society would accept you
I always thought that disability was
always seen the same way through history
budgie in the early days before
the industrial revolution it was seen as part of life
and everyone had a role to play
and could take part in some way.
And then I learned some more… Claire K

I used to believe
When I was small
That I had to shut up
And would never grow tall
And then I learned some more…

I used to believe
I could never learn
‘Cos the teachers in school
Were very firm
And then I learned some more…

I used to believe
I would never be seen
But that’s all in the past
No more “has beens”
And then I learned some more…

Now I’m in a job
Now I can drive
Now I have a voice
Now I am alive
And then I learned some more…

I used to believe
I was a nobody
But now I know
I am most certainly
A somebody
Thank god I learned so more… Margaret T
